MYSTERIES OF LISBON is a remarkably, absorbing, intimate tour of Portugal’s majesterial capital city, filmed according to the guidebook written by Portugal’s great poet, Fernando Pessoa. It is both a tribute to the poet and the city. By following Pessoa, and exiled ‘lisbonner,’ we come to understand, as he himself did, that we are “strangers here as everywhere.” The city we find in these images is not the Lisbon of postcards and clichés, but a Lisbon of trails, alleys, each path unveiling a secret. As Pessoa knew and as you will discover in this poetic, philosophical meandering through one of the grand cities of Europe, even when discovered, Lisbon remains a mystery. In English, narrated by Peter Coyote.
